This free printable lined paper is perfect for helping Kindergarten students practice letter writing. It’s inspired by the Fundations style, with a sky line, plane line, grass line, and worm line. Feel free to save the file to your computer and print as many as you’d like!
I always thought that teaching my kids to read and write would be pretty simple, and then I tried to do it… That was humbling.
Once I sent my oldest off to Kindergarten, I realized that those Kindergarten teachers (bless their hearts) are equipped with tactics and skills and techniques and tricks that I had no idea about!
Now that we are traveling full-time as a family and homeschooling (or roadschooling!) our kids, we are tasked with getting our second son through Kindergarten! He needed practice with letter-forming, and I remembered that my oldest son had learned on lined paper, and each line had a name.

The sky line is the top (labeled on our free printable with a sun and cloud graphic). The middle dotted line is the plane line because the plane is flying through the air! The bottom line is called the grass line. And then there is an additional line called the worm line (because the worm is underground!), which helps them understand how to draw letters such as “g” or “y” that have tails that go below the grass line.
This is so helpful because kids will understand what you mean when you say that a lowercase “h” starts at the sky line, and a lowercase “n” starts at the plane line. The visuals will help them understand how to properly form letters, and how letters compare in size to one another.
One day my husband was working with our son on handwriting practice, so I searched online for a printable with graphics for each line, to help him remember which was which. But I couldn’t find anything that was very good! The one printable paper I did find had blurry black and white graphics that were very difficult to decipher what the images were supposed to be.
I knew I could make a better version, so I searched for some free clipart and made my own! My little guy loved it (and so did my husband)!
I thought, since I was looking for it, others might be too! So I’m sharing it with you here — my Fundations-inspired lined paper free printable, with a sky line, plane line, grass line, and worm line.
