My little giant pool cover pump works for about 1 or2 min then it stops about 1 min later it starts it keeps on doing this the model # is5.APAC there are 2 25 feet 3 prongadapters attached to it 1 goes to the motor the other goes to a black plastic box on the side it also has a short piece of plastic on that prong also can this be run manually with out the auto switch and is that the line to the plastic box? Any help would be greatley appreciated what is the problem LUCKY

How old is the pump, was it thoroughly cleaned before using for the year?

Sometimes the motor on Little Giant pumps will "freeze" and not turn. Sometimes dirt in the suction shroud will be partially to blame. The pumps are not real expensive, and sometimes air lock is to blame. Very rare.

I am not familiar with your specific pump but I also have a pool with a pump and remember special requirements about extension cords. Actually if I remember correct is specificly stated not to use a cord. The extra 25' of cord may be causing the motor to over amp. This will damage the motor. If you must use a cord use the smallest length possible and use a heavy duty larger guage wire cord. GOOD LUCK

Lucky, does the pump cord plug into the back of the black box's cord's plug? The black box is a pressure switch and the cord for the switch should have a vent tube built in to it. This vent tube terminates at the plug and needs to be open to the atmosphere. The tube inside the cord needs to be free of any water/debris, so air will freely flow between the switch and the plug.

Steve everything you said in your responce is correct can I take the black box which you say is the pressure switch apart to make sure that the plastic tube is clear inside the pressure switch also can the pump be run without the pressure switch I realize it would have to be watched to make sure that there is water on the pool cover so it doesnt burn up thanks for the fast responce Lucky

Lucky, the pump can be manually run by just plugging in the pump cord and leaving the switch cord unplugged. I believe the pressure switch housing can be disassembled. The housing needs to be watertight when reassembled.

Steve there is a tear in the sheathing covering the wires going into the pump motor also i hear some kind of fluid in the pressure switch or in the motor housing I cant loosen 2 of the phillips head screws so I cant tell where the fluid is in the switch or motor housing thanks again for the fast responce could water be entering the motor houseing from that tear if that were the case would the motor run at all? I think you also said that there should be no water in the pressure switch houseing when i remove the phillips screws in the pressure switch housing if there is water how do i stop it from entering again? Lucky

Lucky, the motor housing is probably full of oil(it's supposed to be there). The cord sheath need to be watertight. Water will enter and follow the wires down into the motor(not good). The cord should be replaced or the sheath repaired with a shrink tube designed for underground repairs of electrical wiring. The switch housing is sealed with either a gasket or silicone.

Steve thanks again if I run the pump motor with with the pressure switch disconnected and it runs constantly without stopping every minute or two like it use to is it safe to assume the problem is in the pressure switch thanks again I cant tell you enough how helpful you have been Lucky

Lucky, the motor should run constantly without being plugged into the switch. If it does, the problem is with the switch.

Steve I tried running the pump like you said and it ran for about 1 minute that means a bad motor. What I want to know can it be rebuilt? or better to buy a new pump? Thanks for the great info this is truly the best web site for information. Thanks for all the help Danny
